Dr. Kerth died on January 30, 2013. He was associate professor, vice chair and director of the residency program in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern from 1967 until his retirement in 1999. In addition, he was a member of the Board of Directors, American Board of Otolaryngology for 16 years.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jack Kerth graduated cum laude from Ohio State University. He received his MD from Ohio State Medical School in 1958, and completed his residency in otolaryngology and a year's fellowship in facial plastic surgery with Dr. Ira Tresley at Northwestern University. After three years of private practice in Cleveland, Dr. Kerth returned to Chicago and Northwestern for the remainder of his career.
